Disease runs rampant in the winter time. People stay inside. There are fewer open windows to air things out, fewer opportunities to get out in the sunshine. It’s easier for viruses to spread from person to person.
So, how do we stay well through the winter? I have a few tips on winter wellness that I’ve found work well:
So, how do we stay well through the winter? I have a few tips on winter wellness that I’ve found work well:
- Vitamin D3 – Vitamin D3 is something we absorb through our skin from the sun. It’s logical, then, that we get less of it in the wintertime. If you buy whole milk, you’ll notice that the label almost always has something on it saying Vitamin D has been added to the milk. That’s because Vitamin D enables your body to utilize the calcium in the milk. Vitamin D3 also boosts your body’s immunities. So, in the winter, it helps strengthen your resistance to disease to take a Vitamin D3 supplement. You can buy these anywhere vitamins are sold. I suggest buying the strongest dose you can locate. Right now I’m taking 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 per day.
- Elderberry – Elderberry is a traditional remedy for influenza. “Flu Season” is synonymous with wintertime, not only because everyone is in close quarters where disease can spread, but also because flu thrives in cooler temperatures. Elderberry has been shown to stop replication of the flu virus. Elderberry syrup is available in health food stores, but I make my own with fresh-picked elderberries and honey. You can buy dried elderberries online from companies that sell herbs and herbal remedies, and cook up some elderberry for yourself.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle. It helps if you get about 30 minutes of brisk exercise each day and eat healthy – lots of fresh and/or raw fruits and vegetables, plenty of water, and limited amounts of meat.
- Avoid diseased people, which includes avoiding crowded places and disinfecting your hands after being in public places.
