Most people know you can use baking soda to eliminate odors. Even college kids know you can put an open box of baking soda in the fridge after you throw out the mystery food with the green goo and white fuzzy stuff growing over it. It absorbs the odors and removes them from the air in the refrigerator.
You can also use baking soda in cooking. It's an ingredient in a lot of cookie recipes. But the two things I use baking soda for most are laundry and hair.
My favorite laundry detergent is Zote soap. It is shaped like a brick, wrapped in white or pink and on a high shelf in the laundry section of most stores, including Walmart. It costs around a dollar and does as much laundry as one of those big bottles of liquid laundry detergent costing 4 or 5 times as much. I use a grater to grate slivers of soap into my washing machine. Then I sprinkle in about a tablespoon of baking soda. These "sisters" of the wash get my clothes clean and fresh-smelling.
I also use baking soda for my hair. When I go to the shower, I take 2 jars with me. In one is a tablespoon of baking soda stirred up in a cup of warm water. In the other is a cup of apple cider vinegar. I wash my hair with baking soda and condition with vinegar. It leaves my hair soft and shiny. And if you're worried about the vinegar smell... it goes away after about an hour, and there is no smell at all after that.
