On the first day of the first month of the Jewish biblical year (which is different from the Jewish secular year), there was a complete solar eclipse over the top of the planet. News reports said that millions of people in the UK and northern Europe were dipped into darkness as the moon came between Earth and the sun.
At the beginning of Creation, God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years."
The first significance that God attached to the celestial bodies he created is as "signs." This year is marked in so many significant ways by signs in the heavens. This solar eclipse is one of them, and it happened over the North Pole -- the head of the planet, as if the whole planet is being marked. And it was seen in Europe primarily, which marks Europe specifically.
The other important heavenly signs to watch during this season of time are the "Blood Moons" -- a series of complete lunar eclipses that occurred on Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles last year, and will again occur on Passover (10 days from now) and the Feast of Tabernacles this year. The first three are visible in North America. Only the last one will be visible in Jerusalem.
With Pentecost added in, Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles (also called the Feast of Booths, or Succot) complete the group of three feasts at which God required all males among his people to present themselves at the temple. Why are these two feasts being marked by God? Why are these Blood Moons visible in the United States?
The importance of this year, in particular, is that it is a Shemitah year. In the Bible, God specified that every seventh year would be a Sabbath rest for the land, in which there would be no sowing or reaping. This is the Shemitah -- the word means, in part, to let fall. The end of the Shemitah year is marked by the cancelling of debts and a "rest" in the financial sector.
According to Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, in nations that have turned away from God, the Shemitah can bring judgment and chastisement from God. The last Shemitah -- seven years ago -- closed with the stock market crash that began the Great Recession. The one before that -- in 2001 -- closed with the attack on the World Trade Center at 9/11 and an ensuing stock market crash.
This year is even more important because -- according to Rabbi Cahn's calculations -- it is a "super-Shemitah," the Sabbath year that is followed by the Year of Jubilee. Every seven sevens God declared a Year of Jubilee, when anyone who had sold his land or himself would be set free and returned to his land.
Our land is the only other land than the nation of Israel that was settled by God's people and dedicated to God Almighty. God cherished and blessed America above all other nations. And as we have turned away from God, he has chastised us, as a father would his wayward child. The Chinese have surpassed us economically, and the Russians have surpassed us militarily.
I believe these signs in the heavens are God's way of warning us of the coming judgment. Not the end-times judgment that all men face, but the temporal judgment of sinful nations. Our nation is a sinful nation, and we were once considered the people of God.
As we say in the South, it's all over but the shoutin'.
This should be an interesting year......
